Todd Howard is recognized by Game Informer Magazine
as one of the Top 20 Most Influential People in Gaming in the past 20 years and
is known best for his works such as the Elder Scrolls Series and Fallout. Todd
had humble beginnings being born in Pennsylvania and attending the College of
William & Mary in Virginia where he studied financing (which he believed
would be the easiest way to get through college). He decide that putting a
focus on his passion of video games would be more fulfilling and worth the risk
as opposed to the boring secure work in finance.
Todd tried to apply at Bethesda Studios
while still in college but was told to apply again once he graduated from
college but upon graduating he was unfortunately not hired. However persistence
paid off and he was hired in 1994 after re-applying at Bethesda Studios. He
spent several years working as a game designer and producer on titles such as
Terminator: Future Shock and would begin the start of one of his greatest
series in 1996, the Elder Scrolls.
Howard did not work on the first game the
Elder Scrolls: Arena but instead worked on the 1996 release of the Elder
Scrolls: Daggerfall. Howard’s creativity and passion flowed through this game
and into the next game the Elder Scrolls: Redguard in 1998 which increased the
Elder Scrolls even more. In 2003 Howard released the Elder Scrolls III:
Morrowind and worked on the downloadable content (DLC) that followed which was
relatively new and received positively by gamers and critics alike for its
ability to give something extra to the players and give extra playability. In
2005, Howard released his biggest game yet, the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
which just as Morrowind won Game of the Year and was known for its replay value
and of course for the glorious DLC which offered hundreds of hours of unique
gaming to the player .
Howard took a break from the Elder
Scrolls Series to work on a series that had almost been forgotten and needed to
be revived. Of course I am talking about the post-apocalyptic Fallout Series.
The game Fallout 3 looked nothing like the previous games in the series and was
like nothing previously made and that’s attributed to one man, Todd Howard. His
creativity and brilliant mind created one of the most popular games of the past
decade and revived a dying series to a level of glory never previously
imagined. The series similar to previous games had good DLC but left something
a little lacking as how it attributed to the main story. This problem was
addressed and correct once the next title Fallout: New Vegas was released. The
game was not just amazing but all of the DLC felt like expansion packs and all
related back to an underlying story that is hinted at the entire game and
explains your character’s past more clearly.
Just when it seemed Todd Howard could not become more of a
colossus in the gaming industry with more awards and fame, he added another
feather to his cap with the release of the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim which is the
greatest game yet to the series and is promising extensive and perfected DLC
that will not just feel like an added bonus but like another game added to
series which will have millions of fans worldwide spending hours upon hours
exploring and enjoying more of Howard’s hard work for many years to come and
may just earn the title of greatest game ever released.
