Preview of: Donkey Kong Country Returns

Title:               Donkey Kong Country Returns
System:           Wii
Genre:             Platformer

It’s shocking to think that Donkey Kong really has not had a big appearance on the Wii besides his role in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Luckily, with the upcoming holiday release of Donkey Kong Country Returns, DK can finally make his mark on the Wii.
Donkey Kong Country Returns really is not that much changed in comparison to past DK games. All the features everyone knows and loves are still present – bananas, mines, KONG letters, the like. There appears to be little to no actual “story” involved, but this is to be expected from a DK game. New features include simultaneous multiplayer rather than the switch-off system in past games. A good addition to this feature is the ability for the second player (Diddy) to hitch
a ride on DK’s back, as a passive player to prevent disasters for those… well, not amazing players (like me!). As far as control types, there are two options: Wii mote and nunchuk, or the Wii mote held sideways, such as in Epic Yarn. This seems to be rather rudimentary in comparison to other games being released, as they could have made an option for the Gamecube controller or the classic controller. Graphics seem to be improved somewhat, but this is a Wii game and thus the graphics are not always up to par in comparison to that of the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3
Overall, Donkey Kong Country Returns seems like it will be a fun game but it does not look like it will shine as bright as some of the other holiday Wii releases. It seems like the gameplay might be a little too nostalgic for today’s gamers, but this could be the throwback some older players will crave. Hopefully more info will be released soon so the kids can know whether or not to put it on their Christmas list, or if they should just wait for that used copy.
