Chrono Trigger Analysis

Chrono Trigger Story Analysis

The storyline in Chrono Trigger is one of redemption. Basically the characters have to travel through time to make things right by way of performing an action or solving an ongoing conflict, therefore preventing it from happening in the present. One interesting element of the game is that each of the partner characters in the game come from a respective time period each with their own story backgrounds and moves that fit there time period.
For example there is a frog knight from the middle ages, a robot from the future, a cave women from the prehistoric age and so on. I think that it is an important element for the characters in the story to fit in the world of the game. It is more intriguing to play a game where the characters and elements of the story match up with the world because it makes sense and it builds up a story in your head that’s easier to bring back together. Another important element in story is variety. In other words there should be some twists and turns such as when the robot loses his memory to a master computer or when the main character Chrono dies after he jumps in front of an antagonist, Magus in order to take the blast from an apocalyptic creature called Lavos, who’s destiny is to destroy the world. Another thing I like about the games story is all the sub plots going on in each of the time periods. Each of the time periods has its own problem or conflict going on and its interesting to see how its pans out and how it changes into something else as time goes on. For example the prehistoric time period basically has a feud going on between dinosaurs and humans. Next, in the dark ages an ice age is going on which explains why the dinosaurs are gone and there is instead a separation between magic users who live in the sky and earth dwellers who live on the harsh ground. All of these sub plots kind of come together by the end and contribute to the bigger picture of the main plot in the game by building up to and explaining parts of the main plot that wouldn’t be known unless they were there to fill you in. In other words, I think that most games should have lots of little side details and story lore that should contribute to the main plot and themes of the game. For example all of the side plots fit similar themes of human greed and prejudice which all add up the climax of the game when a monster who was basically created by these forces kills the main character and is set to destroy the planet in a set year. In conclusion these story elements in Chrono Trigger work to create an involved, interesting, yet some what open ended storyline.
